Background of the Study
Religious education is recognized for its role in cultivating moral values and ethical behavior, and its influence extends to academic settings—especially in promoting honesty during classroom assessments. In Lafia LGA, Nasarawa State, integrating religious teachings into the curriculum is believed to shape students’ attitudes toward academic integrity by reinforcing values such as truthfulness, accountability, and fairness (Eze, 2023). Educators in the region utilize religious narratives and ethical discussions to emphasize that honesty is a vital component of both personal character and academic excellence. Lessons often include moral stories and parables that highlight the consequences of deceit and the rewards of transparent behavior. This approach seeks to create a learning environment where students not only strive for academic success but also internalize ethical standards that prevent malpractice such as cheating or plagiarism (Nnaji, 2024). Moreover, the moral guidelines provided in religious education help students navigate the pressures of academic competition by instilling a strong sense of duty to uphold integrity in all evaluations. However, despite these positive intentions, reports of academic dishonesty persist, suggesting that the effectiveness of religious education in fostering honesty may be compromised by external pressures such as intense competition and performance anxiety (Owolabi, 2025). In view of these challenges, it is essential to assess how deeply religious teachings influence students’ behavior during assessments. This study aims to explore the extent to which religious education translates into honest practices in classroom settings, offering insights into potential gaps between moral instruction and real-world application. By examining the impact of religious values on academic integrity, the research intends to contribute to a more robust understanding of how to strengthen ethical practices in education (Okeke, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Although religious education is heralded as a cornerstone for developing moral character, its specific impact on promoting honesty in classroom assessments within Lafia LGA, Nasarawa State remains underexplored. Despite the integration of religious values that advocate for truthfulness and accountability, instances of academic dishonesty—such as cheating and plagiarism—continue to challenge educators (Adebayo, 2023). This inconsistency suggests that while religious instruction may provide a moral framework, it does not always translate into consistent ethical behavior in academic settings. The competitive pressures of modern education, combined with external influences, may erode the internalization of these religious teachings, thereby undermining academic integrity. The lack of focused empirical research on the direct relationship between religious education and honest classroom assessments creates a critical gap for educators and policymakers. This study seeks to address these issues by systematically investigating how religious teachings impact students’ honesty during assessments and identifying the factors that may moderate this relationship (Chukwu, 2024). In doing so, the research will provide evidence‐based recommendations for enhancing curricular strategies that reinforce ethical behavior, ensuring that the moral lessons imparted through religious education are effectively translated into academic practice (Uche, 2025).
